On April 11th, the carpeted hallways of Georgetown Day School (GDS) were unusually still for a Wednesday afternoon. Across town, nearly 500 GDS students and faculty crowded Section 110 at Nationals Park and witnessed the Washington Nationals lose their final game in a series against the Atlanta Braves. When Donald Trump won the 2016 Presidential election in 2016, Sarah Sherman, Georgetown Day School (GDS) class of 1993, decided she had to do something. Sherman has been politically active since her days at GDS, but this time, she decided to take action by starting her very own super Political Action Committee (PAC) called “Vote Me Too.” The “#MeToo” hashtag trending in 2017 empowered women across the world to speak up about their experiences with sexual harassment and assault. Recently, Georgetown Day School (GDS) held conversations about socioeconomic status, where students discussed the way social class affects life both inside and outside of school. Ultimately, many came to the conclusion that finances play a role in many facets of GDS culture such as tuition, athletics, prom, trips, and lunch. This past year, teachers Juan Vidal and Amanda Deringer created a new affinity group called Students for Socioeconomic Awareness (SSEA), hoping to prompt important conversations about social class at GDS. “We wanted to provide students with a healthy space to talk about socioeconomic status,” Deringer said. Sold Out Again; Fata Morgana Up Close

On May 17th, the spring showcase opened for Fata Morgana, Georgetown Day School’s (GDS) student-run and student-choreographed dance troupe. With almost every show sold out, Fata Morgana is a staple in the GDS art scene. Even after Maria Watson, Fata Morgana’s faculty advisor, released 20 extra tickets for Friday’s sold-out performance, the club sold these additional tickets within ten hours. Our Seniors and Their Arts

Georgetown Day School (GDS) is known for the variety and quality of its performing and visual arts programs. From Fata Morgana to the spring musical to the Arts Showcase, there are many ways for GDS students to express and develop their artistic capabilities. While the arts programs are undoubtedly shaped by the many students who choose to participate in them, in some cases, students are forced to take arts classes because students must complete one year of a performing art and one year of a studio art before graduating. In the cold winter months of 1925, caver William Floyd Collins got trapped in a tight crevice of Sand Cave in Kentucky only one hundred and fifty feet from the cave’s entrance.
