Make GDS Great Again: How not to talk about Trump

Ben Kaslow-Zieve Since announcing his candidacy last summer, Donald Trump has come to dominate American life. A news cycle rarely passes without a story involving Trump, nor does a day pass without him coming up in conversation. Unfortunately, Trump has made his presence felt in the classrooms of GDS as well. Teachers joke about Trump, perhaps half in jest and half in fear, practically on a daily basis. Some students report hearing jokes about him at least once a week, while others say every other day. To be sure, much of Trump’s rhetoric is at odds with what Georgetown Day

Moving Beyond Controversy: What we can learn from each other

Rohan Palacios Two months ago, the entire Georgetown Day community underwent a process of painful self-examination. What started as a discussion of the use of social media at the school quickly turned into a wider airing of grievances. For a few tense days, students shared experiences of racism, sexism, bullying, and other forms of marginalization that captivated and shocked both peers and faculty alike. Affinity group, grade, and all-school meetings allowed students to voice concerns held by many but never before put into words. These conversations were undoubtedly a significant moment for the community, prompting a new level of awareness,

Ben Kapit Takes GDS Arts Scene by Storm

Finn Camper Freshman Ben Kapit is already a “big man on campus” at GDS. He is known throughout the high school for his dedication to and accomplishments in filmmaking, a branch of the arts less prominent in our otherwise artistically diverse community. Although Kapit is new to GDS, he has already begun to make his mark on the curriculum itself. He is collaborating with art teacher Adrian Loving to design and reboot a once popular filmography course for the coming school year. The film and video creative workshop will be the only class at GDS dedicated solely to videography, providing

Not Just Another Pretty Fricassée: GDS’s “Foodstagrammers”

Lulu Feldman As you walk down the hallway at GDS, you may be passing famous DC foodstagrammers without even knowing it. Freshman William Goldberg’s Instagram food blog, @thetufftruffle, has 6,299 followers. Sophomore Hannah Plotnek’s @the_foodgram has 11,500 followers, while seniors Almira Akyatan, Jessie Granader, Michaela Karam and Hannah Smulson’s @dceatss has a whopping 29,400. To put this into perspective for those who do not use Instagram, my last picture of my grandmother and I got 118 likes, while @dceatss picture of a three-layer cake with pink frosting and rainbow sprinkles got 3,410. Goldberg began @thetufftruffle about two years ago when

Taking to the Streets: FMG Rallies at the Supreme Court in Support of Abortion Rights

Isabel Boyer Georgetown Day School has a long history of social and political activism among the students and faculty. Last year, when a case challenging the Defense of Marriage Act was brought before the Supreme Court, a crowd of middle-schoolers begged to be taken to a rally in front of the court’s chambers in support of marriage equality. In the 1990s, Lower School Principal Gloria Runyon led over a hundred GDS students to gather in front of the South African Embassy in a spirited protest against apartheid, an action for which she was actually arrested. This year, 30 students affiliated

Looking to the Future: GDS Moves Ahead with Retail Development

Noah Gottdenker GDS’s campus expansion plans have come with new ideas, opportunities and possibilities. While it has already been decided that the space currently occupied by Safeway will be the site of the new Lower and Middle School campus and the space currently occupied by the former Martens Volvo-Volkswagen dealership will become some form of retail, it has yet to be decided exactly what will fill the retail space. GDS intends to utilize the Martens space for an expansive retail-residential complex with six to seven floors of residential apartments and one or two floors of retail. Exactly what retail the

Jazz Cats in the Big City: Linde takes GDS band to New York

Abigail Alpern Fisch Linde Takes GDS Band to New York Earlier this spring, Georgetown Day High School Jazz students traveled to New York City to experience an unforgettable day of jazz music with visits to different venues throughout the city. Teacher Brad Linde, GDS’s new Director of Jazz and Creative Instrumental Music Studies, got the idea for the trip after freshman jazz students Benji Ishimaru and Hugo Day would “loudly and comically” voice their admiration for the famous trumpet player and jazz musician Wynton Marsalis throughout the year. “Almost every day, Benji and Hugo would come into my 8th period

The End of an Era: Safeway Closes After 30 Years in Tenleytown

by: Zach Blank At the end of March, Safeway, Inc. announced that, 30 years after its opening, the grocery store’s Tenleytown location would be closing within a month. This news was met with astonishment from many–and quite a few tears. Safeway patrons cherished this “secret” store; from its never-ending stock of freshly-made meals to its department of sartorial excellence in the apparel of local sports teams, the chain supplied it all. For many of Safeway’s patrons, the news of the store’s closing was totally unexpected. Laura Singletary, a frequenter of the store, was “really disappointed” when she heard the store

Defining Consent: Education About Sexual Assault Should Be in the Curriculum

Jenna Schulman and Lucy Walker In the past few weeks, sexual assault has become a widely discussed topic throughout the GDS community. With a recent case of sexual assault reported at Sidwell and heated discussion about sexual assault arising at our own school, the question of how GDS will handle further conversations about consent is becoming a pressing issue. Only recently has the conversation surrounding consent, sexual assault, and rape turned from a “back alley” discussion to being at the forefront of the community. For GDS students, improved sex education seems to be the priority. How can we become more

Goodbye Harold

Henry Schlick When Harold Newton first walked into Georgetown Day School in 1980, the high school, located on MacArthur Boulevard, had nowhere to play its home games. Seven years later a new school with a home field and gym were completed in Tenleytown. And today, 36 years later, he will be leaving the school as one of the most beloved figures in its history. Newton has coached the GDS Men’s Varsity Soccer team for 30 years and in that time they have won 12 MAC banners. The team was first in the league eight years in a row from 1989
