“When I Was Your Age…”: Teacher Traumarama

Have you ever been daydreaming in class and wondered what your teacher was like when they were in high school? Have you ever had an embarrassing high school experience you felt like nobody could relate to? High school is a time that can include many awkward scenarios ranging from first crushes to mortifying sport moments. We interviewed GDS faculty members to share their own funny experiences in high school that they will always remember. Here are their stories:

Adrian Loving, Studio Arts Teacher

Q: What high school did you go to?

“I went to Fairmont Heights High School in Landover, Maryland.”

Q: What is a funny memory you remember from your time in high school?

“I liked this girl in 10th grade and her name was Vanessa Greenfield. She was a pom pom girl, which is like a girl that dance and do stuff before the football sports events. She was cute, but she was going out with this football player, of course, and she sat next to me in civics class and then she also had a locker near my locker. I was in love with her, I mean I really had a huge crush on her, so I decided to write her a letter and stick it in her locker. So I wrote her a little letter and drew her a little picture for Valentine’s Day and it said ‘I really like you, would you like to go out for Valentine’s Day? I am a secret admirer but you probably know who I am.’ So I slipped it in this slot and I didn’t sign my name, but I think she knew it was me because I was always like fawning over her. So the next day, we were in class, and she pulled the letter out and she was giggling with her girlfriends and she was like, ‘Somebody wrote this letter and I think I know who it is!’ and then the teacher asked what they were giggling about, and said give me the letter. The teacher said, ‘Who is it?’ and she said ‘Adrian!’ and pointed me out in front of a class of 25 kids. And then the teacher read the letter in front of the whole class and I just hide and everybody was just dying laughing. And I looked at Vanessa and she just gave me this look like, ‘You will never have a chance with me.’ So it was just public embarrassment in class.”

Bobby Asher, Dean of Students

Q: What high school did you go to?

“I went to St. Albans high school on Mount St. Albans. It’s not far from GDS on Wisconsin Avenue.”

Q: What is a funny memory you remember from your time in high school?

“I remember my high school had a dress code and we had to wear a tie to school, and I had never worn a tie in my life and didn’t know how to wear a tie! My first time that I wore a tie was to school and it was a clip on tie which was a huge social faux pas.”

Elisse Battle, Learning Specialist

Q: What high school did you go to?

“I went to a school called Nardin in Buffalo, New York.”

Q: What is a funny memory you remember from your time in high school?

“I have a summer birthday and every year I got annoyed when people could bring stuff in for their birthdays and they would celebrate. So since I was starting a new school and people didn’t really know me my first year, I lied and told everyone randomly a day in March was my birthday. And so they all like scattered around to make these cards and I brought them home and my mom was like, ‘What is this?!’ and I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ and she asked me why all these cards were here saying, ‘Happy Birthday!’. I told her what happened and she made me go back to school and tell everybody that I lied and returned those cards. It was horrifying! This was 1995 in 9th grade at a new school. The school was a school like GDS, private but only girls, and I was like, ‘I can just reinvent myself!’ and it was hard a little bit because they were like, ‘Who lies about their birthday?!’ But it was mortifying to be 14 years old and to have to stand up and be like, ‘Hey guys, guess what? It really wasn’t my birthday and the reason I said it was is because I was immature.’ It was horrifying.”

Quinn Killy, Dean of School Life

Q: What high school did you go to?

I went to some small high school in Oxford, Ohio called Talawanda High School.”

Q: What is a funny memory you remember from your time in high school?

When I was a freshman in high school, I was maybe 5 feet tall, maybe, and weighed like 105 pounds. I made the varsity soccer team as a freshmen and I was the only freshmen to make varsity, but they didn’t have a uniform small enough for me, so it was like a short sleeve shirt and the uniform’s sleeves like came down past my elbows and the shorts were down passed my knees. I was in tears and I was crying all the way home because they didn’t have a uniform that fit me and then, this was back when hazing was kinda like an okay thing, I was the good luck charm. So I was, in every away game, we got off the bus and I was pinned in the front of the bus and I was tormented a little on the way out. It was like the good luck throughout the season, so I was bruised and battered the entire season!”

Pamela Stanfield, P.E. Teacher

Q: What high school did you go to?

“Riverdale Baptist and it is in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.”

Q: What is a funny memory you remember from your time in high school?

“When we were warming up for basketball practice, and we were jogging laps, and then the coach told us to turn around and back pedal. So I’m backpedaling and at the same time the mail dude was coming in with a truck load of like mail for the athletic department at Riverdale. He pushes it and leaves it right on the endline of the basketball court and then I am backpedalling and I fell in! All my teammates see me about to backpedal into the mailbox thing but they didn’t say anything and I literally fell in the mailbox thing, and it was a big ol’ cart, I fell inside of it and I was trying to play it off cool, and as I was trying to get up I fell back into the mailbox cart and then I end up spilling all the mail on the ground and I had to help him pick it up. It’s not that bad…but it was embarrassing!”
