Chinese Teacher Min Wang has Visa Case Reopened

Following two denied visa applications, GDS Chinese teacher Min Wang learned she must return to China after spending seven years in the United States. Days later, Dr. Wang learned that her case was reopened by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, allowing her to stay and teach in the U.S. pending further examination. In 2017, she filed for an EB-1A visa, which is for people with advanced degrees who have extraordinary levels of skills and talent. Just in case her visa application was denied, she filed for a secondary visa known as O-1A, which is also for people with

Swastikas Found in First-Floor Men’s Bathroom and Choir Room

What we know On November 2, junior Montez McNeil found a swastika in the first-floor men’s bathroom around 1:30pm. On November 12, sophomore Josh Gaba found a swastika on the conductor’s music stand in the choir room during lunch. On November 13, members of The Augur Bit found a swastika in the first-floor men’s bathroom around 1:00pm. This one was not in the same location as the first swastika. On November 14, Katie Gibson spoke to the high school again confirming the new reports. Addressing the perpetrator in the crowd, Gibson said “you should not be at this school.” While washing his hands

GDS Students Participate in National Walkout to Show Solidarity with Dr. Christine Blasey Ford

On Monday, September 24, dozens of GDS students participated in a national walkout to show support for Dr. Christine Blasey Ford before she testifies against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Ford publicly came forward to accuse Kavanaugh of sexual assault just days before the Senate Judiciary Committee was set to vote on Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation. Just yesterday, Deborah Ramirez came forward and accused Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct from their college years, which was reported in the New Yorker. The walkout was led by the 2018 Summit on Sexual Assault and Consent Team. Participants were asked to wear black to

Men’s Varsity Soccer Shoots For Another Successful Season Despite Losing 16 Seniors

2017 felt like the year for the varsity men’s soccer team. 16 seniors, many of whom had played travel soccer since grade school, stepped up to the spotlight. The vibe was electric, the team’s confidence soared, and the pressure for success was ever-present. So large were the expectations that the team’s eventual eight wins, three losses and four ties felt like a disappointment to many. The team finished as co-champions of the Mid Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAC), sharing the banner with both the Potomac School and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Day School. And although GDS made it to the semi-finals round

Heat Safety and the Consequences of Negligence are Called into Question after UMD Death

College football is a true obsession. Fans come to games decked out in school colors, covered in facepaint, and ready to cry if their team loses. But, in recent years, many teams have been plagued with accusations of fostering toxic and even abusive cultures. These teams have diehard fans that will always support their teams’ actions, yet some people are now beginning to wonder just how much players might be suffering behind the scenes. Much of this burgeoning decline in support for college football can be attributed to a recent scandal at the University of Maryland (UMD). Jordan McNair, a

Win, Lose or Tie: At Least We Still Have The Opportunity

Last spring, for an end-of-year history project, I got the chance to read Shoeless Joe, the book upon which the hit film Field of Dreams was based. The novel chronicles the fictional story of Ray Kinsella, a man who briefly abandons his idyllic life as an Iowa farmer to build a public baseball field. The journey takes Kinsella through the dark and dingy cities of northeastern America before he makes it back home to a happy ending on the farm. This summer, I went on a road trip through the midwest and got the chance to witness firsthand what Kinsella’s

A Sea of Red: Caps Win the Stanley Cup

The National Portrait Gallery is one of the most prestigious art museums in the world. Located on the corner of 7th and F streets in downtown DC, it houses some of the greatest works of American portraiture. In fact, the museum’s website proclaims that its collection “help[s] us understand who we are and remind[s] us of what we can aspire to be.” Residents of the nation’s capital, however, know better. It isn’t the art that’s powerful and symbolic. It’s the stairs. On the fateful night of November 20th, 2013, an infamous tradition was born. Bitter NHL rivals—the Washington Capitals and

Less Talk, More Game: My Experience in the GDS Policy Institute

At GDS, conversations about social action tend to be all talk and no game. However, the GDS Policy and Advocacy Institute is one place where things get done and continue to get done. As the name of the program indicates, the Policy Institute is about turning ideas into action. This year, the summer program’s three tracks were titled “Addressing Sexual Assault and Consent,” “Life Resettled,” and “Waging Life in the DMV.” The courses each run for four weeks. During that time, students volunteer, research relevant policies, and create a project. The projects must demonstrate how each group will use their

My Summer Experience as a GRAACC Volunteer

During the summer, I had the opportunity to work voluntarily in the therapeutic toy room of the public hospital for children’s cancer in São Paulo, Grupo de Apoio ao Adolescente e a Criança com Câncer, a support group for adolescent children with cancer (GRAACC). For two of the weeks that I was in São Paulo, I spent weekday mornings helping in the therapeutic toy library and giving love and affection to the children, whose ranged from zero to fourteen years old. The Senninha Brinquedoteca of the GRAACC hospital has a positive impact on the humanization process in the treatment of

Should Art be Separated From the Artist?

What is art? Many would argue that art is the creative expression of one’s views of the world. That art, while basically undefinable, demonstrates a point of view, a commentary, or some form of analysis about the world around us. As art is an artist’s interpretation of the world, it is impossible to fully separate art from the artist. In the same way that it is important to be mindful of the artist’s background and upbringing when consuming their work, considering the artist’s moral standing is equally relevant. Art is inherently linked to the artist, and to separate it from

Getting rid of APs was the right move. Let’s keep it that way.

It came as a relief to many stressed students when, on June 18th, 2018, administrators from several D.C. independent schools sent a letter to The Washington Post, revealing how their schools were planning to eliminate Advanced Placement (AP) classes by 2020. One of these administrators was our own Head of School, Russell Shaw, paving the way to minimize the import of standardized tests at GDS. This decision is a smart move for GDS as the school continues to grow physically and intellectually. AP classes have been holding students and faculty back by putting too much emphasis on adhering to an
