Sophomore Morgan Laryea-Crawford could have easily scored. The goalie was on the opposite side of the net, and with a quick tap, Laryea-Crawford could have secured her first goal of the game. But instead of taking the shot, in full Ted Lasso fashion, she made the extra pass to senior Annie Del Guercio, who scored GDS’ fourth and final goal. The goal was a fitting ending to the women’s varsity soccer team’s 4–0 senior-night victory against the Flint Hill Huskies on Monday.
The win brought GDS’ overall record to 5–6–1. An Oct. 22 win against Sidwell Friends School gave the Hoppers their first league win and brought their overall record to 6–6–1.
Flint Hill started the Oct. 19 senior-night game with the ball, but GDS quickly took control and kept momentum for most of the first half. After 13 shots on goal by GDS and none by Flint Hill, a Flint Hill player accidentally scored an own goal, making the score 1–0.
On the next play, the Huskies attempted their first goal of the night, but junior goalkeeper Elayna Lewis leapt up and saved the ball. After three more unsuccessful shots on goal by GDS, the referees blew their whistles to call halftime.
“I think that we played really well as a team,” senior Shanez Benyoucef said. “We finally figured out how to make great connections on the field and have better communication, which was shown in the results.”
The second half started with more of the same: GDS took three shots on goal, which were all saved by the Flint Hill goalkeeper. But after GDS stole the ball after a Flint Hill goal kick, junior Iris Vergow sent a shot into the back of the net, bringing the score to 2–0.
“I thought we really picked it up and played well in the second half,” head coach Katie Redmond said. “We really moved the ball offensively.”
Vergow’s goal was quickly followed by seven more GDS shots on goal, all of them saved by the Flint Hill goalkeeper. But the Hoppers finally scored after Laryea-Crawford passed to junior Naomi Berger, who sank the ball into the bottom left corner, bringing the score to 3–0.
Del Guercio scored the final goal off the selfless pass from Laryea-Crawford, and the game ended 4–0, GDS.
The team will play at National Cathedral School on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 4:15 p.m.
