
This recipe has been passed down from my great-grandmother, and my family makes gingerbread cookies every year to celebrate the start of fall. These cookies taste delicious, and they will make your kitchen smell of spices during the holiday season!
Ingredients:
- ½ cup shortening
- ½ cup molasses
- ½ cup sugar
- ½ tsp. nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger
- 1 beaten egg
- 2 ½ cups flour
- ½ tsp. baking powder
- ⅔ tsp. salt
Directions:
- Mix shortening, sugar, molasses and spices in a saucepan and boil.
- Add egg to the mixture and stir quickly.
- Remove from heat and pour sifted flour, baking powder and salt into the bowl.
- Divide dough into two parts on wax paper and shape into rectangles. Each one should be ¼ inch thick.
- Chill in the freezer for one hour.
- Take dough out, and use a cookie cutter to cut preferred shapes.
- Bake for ten minutes at 350 degrees.
- Cool for 20 minutes.
- Eat!
