The SSC bulletin is a weekly article covering the events at each Monday’s council meeting.
The weekly Student Staff Council (SSC) meeting began at 3:29 p.m. on Monday, March 10. As council members arrived, Assistant Principal for School Life Quinn Killy set out the day’s snacks: Frito-Lay chips, Post Malone Oreo cookies and Fun Dip candy.
This week, the council confirmed plans for St. Patrick’s Day, discussed food options for the new Farmer’s Fridge vending machine and planned springtime activities.
SSC plans on holding a scavenger hunt for Lucky Charms boxes and a raffle for a McDonald’s Shamrock Shake for St. Patrick’s Day on March 17. They discussed potentially dressing as leprechauns—dubbed “rep-rechauns” by freshman representative Zach Prober—and planned to decorate classroom white boards with St. Patrick’s Day messages. Killy also planned to dress as a leprechaun.

SSC President Natalia Freedman also announced that senior Ella Abramson agreed to perform Irish dancing in the Forum during community time on St. Patrick’s Day. The council decided to ask history teacher Topher Dunne to accompany Abramson’s performance by playing the accordion or the bagpipes, as Dunne knows how to play many instruments.
Representatives then discussed reactions to the food options in the recently installed Farmer’s Fridge vending machine. Sophomore and freshman representatives said they had heard complaints about excessive amounts of mayonnaise in sandwiches, while others said that the pesto pasta bowl was one of the machine’s most popular items. Killy plans to ask Farmer’s Fridge if the machine could sell canned coffee and if the company could tailor the available meals to students’ preferences. The machine’s current meal selection is up to Farmer’s Fridge’s discretion.
SSC Vice President Grace Khuzami brought the council’s attention to recent thefts of food she has heard about. She said many students’ deliveries have been taken by other students before the intended recipient could claim their food. The council decided to hold grade-wide office hours within the next week to remind students not to take others’ food and to hear feedback about SSC projects. The freshmen discussed serving pizza at their office hours to entice students to come.
The council broke into their food, special events, furniture and mental health subcommittees. Freedman and Khuzami, the only representatives present in the mental health group, checked in on the other groups’ progress in place of meeting as a subcommittee.
The food group decided to schedule an ice cream truck to come to school during lunchtime once in April, twice in May and once in June. The group also sent out a Google Form about food preferences for the Farmer’s Fridge machine.
The special events group planned to work with the P.E. teachers to create a school-wide March Madness bracket for the college basketball tournament in late March. The group also confirmed that the smoothie bowl company Playa Bowls will come to school as a lunch vendor after spring break.
The furniture group continued to work on finding a coat rack suitable for the senior corner. The group reached out to the maintenance team last week to ask if the team could repair the broken mirror in the first floor men’s bathroom. The maintenance team responded and said they would fix the broken mirror, but it has not been replaced yet.
SSC then split into grade-level groups to discuss upcoming projects. The freshmen decided to hold a series of grade-wide activities like in the thriller TV series Squid Game, including tug of war and cookie making. The sophomores planned to hold lunch for their grade on the high school field on Wednesday, March 19 to celebrate the beginning of spring. The juniors scheduled and sent out a Google Form for a soccer tournament while the seniors continued planning for their volleyball tournament.
Council members began to leave the meeting at 4:29 p.m. as Killy handed out the last of the chips.
