Emails sent Sunday, Sept. 10 to science teacher Khalif Muhammad’s students and their parents announced that he would no longer be teaching his classes due to an “unexpected transition” from GDS. The emails were sent by Assistant Principal for Academics Khalid Bashir and signed by Bashir, High School Principal Yom Fox and Science Department Chair Nina Butler-Roberts.
According to different emails received by students in three of Muhammad’s physics sections, science teachers Matt Friel, Aden Richards and Joe Boltri, respectively, will be taking over his classes.
In an interview with the Bit, senior Victoria Agerskov-Townsend said that Muhammad came with a lesson plan and assigned homework for the upcoming week during his first physics class. “It was really out of the blue,” she said, referring to Muhammad’s departure from the school.
Senior Laura Belle Kaufman, another of Muhammad’s physics students, told the Bit that Muhammad seemed normal during last week’s class and did not mention that he would be leaving the school.
Muhammad has since been removed from the GDS faculty directory. The Bit emailed Muhammad for comment, but his account had been deactivated.
The Bit was unable to interview Muhammad and the administrators who announced his departure prior to publication. Additional information will be posted in the coming days on this webpage.
