Opinions | Again and again in the past year, GDS a Opinions | Again and again in the past year, GDS administrators have stepped in to impose their judgments on students’ choices and expression—from athletes’ hype-building outfits to the music of a math competition promo. In a new essay, Ethan Wolin ’23 argues that the culture of restrictiveness hurts students’ education and strikes at the heart of GDS’ time-honored belief in student autonomy. Visit the Bit’s website to read the piece, in the Opinions section—and share it with others!

On Saturday, the closing night of Oliver!, Laura R On Saturday, the closing night of Oliver!, Laura Rosberg’s last GDS production, marked the emotional end of the theater director’s 44-year GDS career. Ethan Wolin ’23 covered the momentous day—nearly 12 hours of the usual tasks and traditions interspersed with special tributes to the revered architect of one of GDS’ signature programs. Visit theaugurbit.com now to read the article, with photos by Kaiden J. Yu ’23.

Now, Rosberg is set to retire, after her final show, Oliver! But a confluence of recent constraints—such as the veto of her preferred musical—has fettered key aspects of Rosberg’s approach, students say, and put the theater community on edge. This in-depth article by Ethan Wolin ’23—based on interviews with over 20 students and colleagues of Rosberg’s, past and present—looks back on her career and ahead to doubts about GDS theater without its architect.

A largely unseen book of school history, call-outs A largely unseen book of school history, call-outs on @blackatgds, a part-time contract to manage hiring, a full-circle return to the classroom—retirement did not detach Kevin Barr, GDS’ last associate head, from the school where he spent his entire career.

Ethan Wolin ’23 spent five months trying to understand Barr’s last two and a half years and his conviction that the community should learn about its pioneering founders and reinvest in their educational approach.

“If people aren’t interested in why the school exists, and what the founding principles were,” Barr said, “I would say, huh, isn’t it funny that we want to be in a place that we know nothing about? And then we’ll just make up stuff about what this place is and should be. That’s a troubling idea.”
