What’s that Jacket, Margiela?

Maaike Laanstra-Corn and Ana Sosa-Ebert

Georgetown Day School prides itself on being a creative and inventive school environment, so it’s no surprise that fashion is a go-to outlet for student individualism. Walking down the hallways at GDS, we always see outfits that catch our eye. From cutting edge, to bold prints, to monochromatic looks, there are many forms of style that GDS students make their own. We decided to use this column to give a voice to those students with distinct fashion perspectives.

Q: In a couple words how would you describe your style?

A: My style varies a lot day to day, and individual outfits I wear are often inspired by weird things/concepts/associations, and not really a specific or cohesive aesthetic. I also wear a lot of pieces that I like because I think they are cool or interesting, as opposed to being trendy or something I think other people will like. Also this year I’ve really embraced comfort and powerful pants.

Q: Who is a fashion icon/inspiration of yours?

I don’t really try to emulate the style of anyone else, but my desired summer aesthetic is Amandla Stenberg in the desert.

Q: Why do you care about fashion/style

For me, I wear clothes I like as a form of self empowerment and to give myself agency over my body and connectedness to how I see myself.

Q: What is one style rule (if any) you live by?

One style rule I have is always carry an extra scrunchy and a pair of hoop earrings in my wallet. Other than that, I just won’t wear something out if it makes me feel bad about my body.

Q: How long do you spend on your look on avg in the morning or night?

Sometimes I know what I want to wear as soon as I wake up and other times I just stare into my closet. Typically, it’s anywhere from 10 to 25 minutes.

Q: In a couple words how would you describe your style?

I would consider the direction of my style contemporary net art pop minimalism. I don’t always always hit the mark, but it wouldn’t be very fun if it weren’t a game.

Q: Who is a fashion icon/inspiration of yours?

Right now I’m so inspired by the way Kodak Black dresses. He always looks like a consumer product– colorful, and head to toe in labels.

Q: Why do you care about fashion/style?

To me, fashion is about vanity. I dress like art because I love myself.

Q: What is one style rule (if any) you live by?

I suppose if I’m not impressing myself, then I’m doing something wrong.

Q: How long do you spend on your look on avg in the morning or night?

I spend maybe 10 minutes to an hour on the average school night picking an outfit. During the weekend, 2 hours is where I draw the line. But sometimes it’s over the course of a few days.
